I’m back from my second Burning Man! I won’t go too deep here cuz anyone living in San Francisco is about to bite my and everyone else’s head off for talking about it nonstop. If you know, you know.
There are some reflections I want to share here, more because they relate to my creative projects—like this blog! And this recipe for mango Nutella dessert rolls, the MVP of the post.
Creativity is boundless. The playa is magical, and it’s because of the creativity that everyone brings to it. From wacky costumes to gargantuan mobile sound stages to multi-colored light structures to thoughtful theme camps, this is the place for untamed souls. I thought about that often as I created this recipe. Cinnamon rolls are for the default world. But mango Nutella rolls that you can eat for breakfast or dessert or whenever you damn well please? That’s playa magic.
Be silly. I nearly called these Bad Bitch rolls because I listened to Truth Hurts on repeat as I made them, and Lizzo would appreciate me taking cinnamon rolls and completely upending them into something so much better.
Challenge myself with bigger projects. Burning Man is the apotheosis of weeks and months of hard work. It’s difficult to think that long-term, or even that medium-term. But the rewards are evident. I’ve been putting together ideas on how to expand my food writing presence and channel my energy into larger projects. They may not make it to this blog or even Instagram for quite some time, but I think they will be worth it.
Everything is temporary. Structures burn. Black Rock City gets taken down. Nothing lasts forever, or sometimes even more than a few days. Even so, it’s still worth reveling in and loving. I highly doubt these dessert rolls will last as long as Burning Man did—they’re pretty damn delicious. But bake away and enjoy them to the fullest.
