Review: Yuzuki Japanese Eatery

In the growing list of Japanese restaurants taking over the city, add one more: Yuzuki, the subject of today’s review.

Yuzuki is on the (in)famous corner of 18th and Guerrero. It competes with Mission staples like Tartine and Delfina, but it holds up to the challenge. The space, with its high ceilings and concise menu, showcases unique Japanese offerings that are high quality without being pretentious.

At this point, I’ve had a lot of Japanese food in my life, yet Yuzuki still brought forth dishes I hadn’t tried before. Among them, beef tataki wrapped in ginger, and DIY hand rolls filled with wasabi and yam. Let it be known that I am NOT good at rolling, but it made for a fun, interactive project at the dining table.

Yuzuki rocks dessert as well. The anmitzu is a combination of mochi, sesame, agar jelly, and ice cream, and it’s fantastic, albeit a little strange at times with so many contrasting textures. It’s a dessert where you’re not sure what’s going on but you can’t stop eating it until it’s done.

For a solid meal any night of the week, Yuzuki is another restaurant showcasing Japanese cuisine and continuing the country’s food revolution in San Francisco.
