It’s been a much-needed rainy start to the new year. But even with the gloom and grey skies, San Francisco slowly came alive again. As everyone tip toed their way back from the holidays (including my own trip to Mexico), they took time to reconnect – of course through food.
From lurdiez cheese night to breakfast dates to trying new spots for dinner, January has been a lot busier than I expected! But it’s what I love about SF – and what keeps me going back to my favorite haunts while actively seeking out the new.
My top picks for January:
The Mill: I’ve come here at least once every week. Okay twice; but it’s been a perfect escape from the rain. The Danish language has a word for such intimate coziness – hygge. I felt it during my travels there and feel a healthy dose of it whenever I sit at the window seats here.
Choux: Right around the corner from my apartment and a perfect little snack. There are many flavors to choose from, but my favorite is the salted caramel – a classic.
Black Sands: It’s FINALLY open after being closed during the holidays for two weeks! I was stoked to try the brunch menu – pomegranate French toast and poached egg polenta did not disappoint.
Mikkeller: A mecca for unique beers with just as unique names (A Justin Brewber ale, anyone?). It’s usually packed, but on a lazy rainy Saturday evening, we got seats and ate our way through the sandwiches and mussels with some delicious sour beer.
Huxley: The restaurant just reorganized itself with a new chef, and his menu is coming together nicely. Slightly more upscale classics like oysters with Asian pear and tarragon give the spot a good date night vibe – even if it’s just a date with my best girl friend.
Al’s Place: It’s been impossible to eat here after it was named the best restaurant in America, so when I came, I basically ordered everything since I don’t know when I’ll be back. Even if you eat meat, you don’t miss it here at all. The smoked apple sauce for the fries is the condiment of my dreams, second only to the gooey chocolate peanut butter brownie.
Blue Fig: This unassuming café in the Mission is super casual – until you get the blue corn waffle. Heaped with whipped cream and berries, it’s the best weekday pick-me-up.

Hey like your blog, the food looks amazing, am so jealous . Favourite spots from January, well that’s a tricky one, I think Scuba Diving with the turtles and exploring a shipwreck over at Carlisle Bay was awesome.
