Weekend E.A.T. – SXSW 2014

SXSW 2014

Another year, another South by Southwest Music Festival!

As this was the second time I attended the iconic craze in Austin, TX (check out food recs from last year’s trip), I thought I’d be somewhat of a pro at tackling all the music acts I wanted to see in a timely and non-sleep deprived manner.

I was not.

But I did get to spend the best of times with my 3rd Coast crew and eat some serious noms. While not a SXSW 2014 pro, I’d like to think I have some decent knowledge of food in the city; I like to do my research so when I pull up to the scene I can be ready to go. That way, at least if I’m not prepared for consecutive 5 a.m. outings, I’m prepped for the subsequent brunch – just as important, obviously.

Below are some of my favorite spots that are now almost staples of a visit to ATX – I’ll be posting a list of some new spots I visited tomorrow!

Keep Austin Hungry.

Linkables

  • Houndstooth Coffee – 401 Congress Ave. Get any of their rotating coffee while you work; they have great WiFi.
  • Jeffrey’s Restaurant & Bar – 1204 West Lynn St. One of the best new restaurants for a reason. Get an Old Fashioned prepared tableside and go nuts with fried oysters. Order the soufflé. Both flavors.
  • Daily Juice – 205 West 3rd St. One of the bset places to detox with a smoothie, juice, or wheatgrass shot. My favorite is the Green Republic with ginger added in.
  • Turf n’ Surf Po Boy – 407 Lavava St. Serious, serious tacos, especialy the catfish versions.

Jeffrey's of Austin

No trip is complete without a visit to Jeffrey’s, where my old pastry chef from SF now works. Crispy oysters with grapefruit and habanero are a must.

Burrata is seriously the best cheese ever.

Seafood risotto with lemon-saffron rice and pea tendrils.

I didn’t eat this, but my friends loved it – Lamb ossobuco with Israeli couscous and pistachios

Jeffrey's of Austin

Can’t forget sides! Roasted carrots with jalapeños.

Dessert insanity #1: Rocky Road sundae with smoked vanilla ice cream, marshmallows, cherries, and a gold leaf

Chocolate soufflé with olive oil ice cream – a staple on the Jeffrey’s menu
