When configuring how to celebrate the
big young 24 with friends, I decided to focus on the key aspects of what I love most – my beautiful friends (and they are all truly sexy and amazing); cooking and eating with people; and brunch.
Enter in the most epic birthday brunch of all time. Of all. Time.
Having never entertained so many people and having my kitchen sink explode at 2 a.m. the night before (Seriously, I can’t make this stuff up. Major shout-out to the poor plumber who came and fixed everything in the middle of the night), brunch could either have been a disaster or a culinary feat. Luckily, it was the latter.
The secrets to throwing a good food party are to have a combination of sweet and savory, a participation station, a little bit of planning, and a lot of alcohol. I’ll be posting recipes for the sweet stuff all this week in a brunch series – think strawberry scones, mango muffins, and a nectarine meringue cake. The omelette bar was an ideal way for guests to personalize their noms and get in on the cooking action with tons of farmer’s market veggies to choose from. No nomelette is complete without a little fire, so the amalgamation of hot sauces and salsa brought that heat. As for the alcohol, this is brunch, so there is only one drink of choice: mimosas.
Even with all the planning and cooking, it’s extremely important to add a personal touch to everything, as that is what distinguishes one meal from the next. While potentially out-of-place in a usual setting, mango juice boxes (THE BEST), bhujia snacks (desi staple), and swanky salsa (spicy!) were my pieces of flair. Quirky, yet full of swag, which is how I intend to live this next year out.
I am so damn lucky to have fantastic friends and to be living in such a hungry city. This weekend, I conquered brunch; next up: the world.
Sounds pretty swank farms to me.
Ahhhh that looks and sounds so amazing!!! I LOVE the omelette bar–SO MANY VEGGIES! That spread sounds incredible. Can’t wait to see the recipes!! Also, I totally thought you could eat corn raw! Who says you cant??
