I’ve never believed in diets. In a city like San Francisco, there is a surplus of good food to be had; to deny yourself of any of it is a transgression. Moreover, no matter what type food they cook or eat, institutions here are glued together by one mantra: To provide delicious, wholesome food that you deserve to enjoy.
There are many small businesses that emulate this value, and I had the opportunity to hang out with four of them this past weekend for a Sunday funday brunch. We spent the afternoon eating, creating, and celebrating spring. It was a great reminder that good food is never hard to find when with the right company.
I’m drawn to these businesses for various reasons, the highlights of which are below:
Sprig: Sustainable, organic ingredients at a reasonable price delivered to me. Sprig has been a godsend during my marathon training when I’ve been simply to exhausted to cook or get food but still aiming to eat well and eat food I actually like.
Project Juice: I’m anemic, so I’m constantly looking for ways to get the most nutrients I can out of everything I eat and drink. Project Juice has been a great way to load up on iron and keeping me energized for work or for play.
Farmgirl Flowers: I’ve always been under the idea that buying and selling flowers is wasteful of resources and money. But FGF proved me wrong—they partner with local businesses to support the environment, have 2 percent waste, and make everyone happy.
Jane: It’s no secret how much I love Jane, and when I met the owner Amanda, that was the equivalent of meeting a celebrity. Both Fillmore and Larkin locations are the perfect slices of bustle, tranquility, routine, and indulgence.
No matter your lifestyle or diet, be sure to check out all of these amazing businesses working hard to make you feel good.
