In less than two weeks I’ll be attending Burning Man for the first time.
On one hand, I’m grateful and looking forward to the adventure. It’s coming at a time where I get to write out a new chapter, blazing new trails and pushing ahead in professional, personal, and romantic matters.
On the other hand, what the F am I doing. I’m slowly learning the ways of the playa, aka having three boxes a day delivered to my office from Amazon Prime and equipping myself with a 720-count of baby wipes. It feels extreme but necessary, as radical self-reliance is expected to be.
It’s no surprise that my contribution to my camp is food—specifically desserts. Eating in the desert is a different ballgame than in the foggy city of San Francisco. Things have to be long-lasting and leave minimal trace. Ideally, they should taste good too, which is what I set out to do here by recreating a childhood classic—rice krispie treats.
There is not a single person in the world who dislikes rice krispie treats, making them an easy way to feed a crowd and evoke good feelings. There is also not a single person who dislikes Oreos and Nutella—I’m pretty sure this is a statistical fact. Combined, they make a dessert that is smooth and crunchy, not to mention easy to clean up, because there will be none left. Throw in some brown butter, and you’ve got yourself a treat ready for the crowd. As for me, I’ll have a treat that’s way more ready for the desert than I am.
