Now that podcasts are v mainstream, I’m often asked which ones I listen to when I’m cooking. It’s a tricky question because when in the kitchen, I sort my podcasts into two categories: Ones where I need to pay attention to every line to follow along, and ones where if I can’t hear them due to the oven timer going off/caramel boiling, I can still get the gist (or else be okay with them being white noise). It’s less about when I’m cooking and more about WHAT I’m cooking.
So I made a list of these podcasts I listen to based on what I’m cooking. I’d love to hear if you do the same, or if there are any other ones I should tune into!
In no particular order:
This American Life // What I’m cooking: A more labor intensive recipe, like a multi-layer cake, or a jam where I’ll be in the kitchen for some time. I can take my time with the recipes and getting into all the stories in the episode.
Hidden Brain // What I’m cooking: Some sort of tart, where I can delve into the different flavor profiles and layers while listening to something that I find very stimulating.
The Read // What I’m cooking: Something with a lot of sautéing and high-heat, like a veggie quiche or caramel. The kitchen gets real loud and ingredients are cooking quickly, so I need something lightweight to listen to in the background.
How I Built This // What I’m cooking: A cake that needs longer bake time, so I can use the downtime to dive into these episodes.
Planet Money // What I’m cooking: Cookies! They’re fun and quick and I can listen to this while churning out multiple trays of chocolate chip goodness.
Bon Appetit Foodcast // What I’m cooking: Something from Bon Appetit 🙂 Their podcasts include a recipe, so it’s interesting to see how they write them and what they expect from the cook.
