Ok April I see you.
The month has been starting off real strong with new music to revive us (yes I’ve listened to the new Drake song at least 100 times already), and new food spots to sustain us. It made for a weekend that grooved together effortlessly, which are my favorite types of days because they feel truly relaxing and satisfying.
Admittedly, I’ve dropped off the SF brunch scene lately. For one, I hate waiting in line for anything. I also have been trying to cook more at home, which lets me budget (new years resolution still top of mind) and stay creative. I’ve also found many brunch spots of late to be hackneyed and boring, with the same dishes appearing on every menu.
Barcino just started doing brunch a couple weeks ago and damn, it is so refreshing and unique. The restaurant serves Catalan food at its usual dinner service and emulates the same cuisine for its brunch menu. During my Spain trip, I remember brunch having similar flavor profiles as dinner. The Barcino menu keeps things authentic and actually makes things better, which I didn’t even know was possible.
In true millennial style, there’s a toast section on the menu, but in Catalan style, the toasts are topped with anything from pork sausage, goat cheese, and honey (which we got and it was delicious) to duck liver mousse and pistachio crema.
The menu continues with traditional cold tapas, and then larger fusion plates to share. The Ou (poached eggs and chorizo hash) was great, with spicy pieces of sausage in every bite. But the fan favorite was the Torrijas—cinnamon French toast with apples, whipped cream, and almonds. It tasted like Cinnamon Toast Crunch in brunch form, with the right amount of toppings, a crunchy exterior, and a billowing interior texture.
I’m sure Barcino will soon be a part of the SF line scene, but until then, come early (they open at 11), hungry, and ready to hum your favorite Drake lyric to brunch.
