Most west coast music festivals are scorching hot with too much fringe and too little clothing. But then there was Treasure Island Music Festival, last weekend’s event that threw this schema out of the water—literally.
The entire weekend, the island concert experienced turbulent periods of torrential downpours. Being the devout live music lovers that we are, my friends and I donned ponchos, beanies, galoshes, and extra beers to keep us warm and dry, but we still got soaked. It was frustrating at times, but it also felt like a weird test of survival, to see who had it in them to dance in the rain and mud for the sake of good music.
And although my mascara ran like it was in a marathon, I made it through to watch some pretty amazing artists, and it was teeth-chatteringly worth it.
If you’re looking for some new tunes to get you through this week, here were some of my favorites from the festival (in Spotify links):
“Drinkee” (Sofi Tukker) { I love listening to songs in other languages because you have to listen to the melody if you can’t understand the lyrics. This song makes it impossible to not dance }
“What If I Go” (Mura Masa) { This song starts with simple drums and builds up to a declarative sound that emulates the lyrics perfectly }
“Deadbeat Girl” (Day Wave) { An easy favorite for a road trip, beach day, or Sunday morning }
“Tilted” (Christine and the Queens) { I’m enraptured by Héloïse, who truly believes in the fabulousness of everyone and sings it for all to hear. Her style and dance moves make this song even better }
“Hey Mami” (Sylvan Esso) { This to me is about the everyday girl who is anything but everyday }
“Begin Again” (Purity Ring) { An epic song for an epic evening of rain, wind and mud that left everyone uplifted and undeterred }
