Returning from a trip typically encompasses two things: Realizing how horribly out of shape I’ve gotten as I half-dog paddle across the pool, and catching up on all my favorite columns and articles.
My reading list of choice is rarely current events. I have easy access to that through social media and almost every other place on the internet. Instead, I prefer to focus on articles that help me acclimate my mind. I search for what inspires and reminds me that I am who I am and I should not have to give that up for anyone.
Some personal events have made me feel the need for this reminder more than usual this week. So as I reread my monologue from Burning Man as a starting point, here’s what else has been on my reading list that I’d like to share. If anything sticks out at you, let me know in the comments 🙂
Creating a Pastry Chef from Scratch: Dessert is in demand, but pastry chefs aren’t getting the recognition and compensation they deserve. A look into this culinary disconnect reminds me how much work goes into learning the art of pastry and that it shouldn’t be taken for granted.
A City of Women: How would society be if we truly made it a woman’s world instead of a man’s? We should be celebrating and commemorating historic women as much or even more than the alternate.
The last five paragraphs of this article: “When you say to someone, “I care about you, but I don’t know if you care about me” and instead of answering, that person withdraws, remember that.”
From She to He in First Grade: Nobody should ever dictate who you are and what you like or don’t like. That’s not their authority. It’s yours.
Awkward Sex, Onscreen and Off: Domineering male behavior is on its way out, but vulnerable emasculated behavior is something men are still struggling to display, oftentimes using women as their collateral damage.

Ohhh, girl. This post is exactly what I needed to read. I’m slightly (read: very) bummed that, knowing me, I will not go out to grab the books that you listed and about which I’m so avidly learning right now (I’m reading all of the descriptions and can’t tear my eyes away!). It’s been a pretty crazy month or two here as well, and this reminds me that being a strong individual involves so many different skills and perspectives.
I think you’ll like this one, by the way–it cracked me up and *totally* resonated with some of the personal things that I was dealing with a month or two back: at comedy night, a female comedian steps up and says, “My ultimate sexual fantasy is that a guy is in bed with me. At the moment that he is about to come, he pulls my face close to his, looks me straight in the eye, and says seriously, ‘I respect you.'”
Cheers, girl! xo

HAHAHAHA that is freakin’ AMAZING. TY so much for sharing that, I’m dying. It sounds like a lot of people I know have been having turbulent weeks, and I hope we can all support each other in any way we can 🙂
