The week before I set off for Europe, I set off to explore a neighborhood in SF I don’t often venture to—the Marina. There lies a cool, Caribbean-themed restaurant by the name of Palm House that I’m reviewing today.
Palm House fills a small niche in San Francisco for Caribbean cuisine. It’s got the seafood that is prerequisite for any island food—my favorites were the coconut prawns and the blackened fish tacos—and it’s got the more innovative dishes that set it apart from other restaurants. Their brussels sprouts with coconut and macadamia-nut mac and cheese were unusual and delicious, as demonstrated by the facts that I have photos of neither simply because our group devoured them so quickly.
While the food itself is stellar, the cocktails are even better, and something I’d come back to Palm House for on their own. There are the twists on the classics (A five-spice dark and stormy), the dangerously delicious (the chipotle mango margarita), and the sly jab at its neighborhood location (the basic beach). All are solid choices, and during happy hour, you can get the opportunity to try even more at a smaller price.
Whether it’s for dinner or drinks or both, Palm House is a little slice of paradise in the Marina. Bring your appetite (and your Hawaiian shirt if you want) and see for yourself.
